WHY YOGA HELPS YOUR SPINE

As a certified Hatha Yoga and Pilates Teacher, I have seen a lot of people with varies degrees of back injuries, and pain. Many students come with different posture issues, and alignment problems. In my 10 plus years of teaching in varies locations, I have seen patterns and habits which lead to back problems. Some minor and some more severe. Yet most, if not all problems have been helped or even eliminated completely with a regular yoga practice.

PHYSICAL BENEFITS OF YOGA PRACTICE FOR YOUR SPINE

STRENGTHEN MUSCLES

Yoga builds and increases strength in many muscle groups. As we hold positions (poses) in yoga, we strengthen and improve muscles by breathing deeply into  the back and the surrounding  tendons. At the same time the abdominal wall will get stronger. Which is an amazing benefit for the overall spine and back health.

Your spine and abdominal muscles are important components of the muscular stability of the back. It is key to help the body maintain proper alignment and posture. When these muscles are getting stronger and develop over time, we reduce or avoided back discomfort.

STRETCHING MUSCLES

Stretching muscles and creating space between the vertebras of the spine, reduces tension in stress-carrying muscles. Deep breathing during our yoga practice will aid in releasing tightness and stress. The different yoga poses, will flex, arch, round, or stretch the spine. Creating the right sequence for the student depends on the experience and knowledge of the individual instructor. We need to promote relaxation through movement and breath, and flexibility in muscles and joints, to benefit the back.

 BODY ALIGNMENT

Various yoga poses will develop the body to be healthy and strong.  Practice several times during the week will result in improved posture. Alignment and increased balance, in the spine, shoulders and hips are a result. Yoga will strengthens both sides of the body equally, over time. The natural curvature of the spine, plays an important roll in reducing and avoiding  back pain.
